Enjoy a taste of the exotic

Treat your garden to something out of the ordinary

When thinking of exotic plants the mind conjures up images of larger-than-life leaves and vibrant, unusual flowers that look as if they’ve been plucked straight from the rainforest. With so many exciting new varieties being uncovered in tropical climes and money being invested in breeding programs here in the UK, now is a prime time to experiment with growing something a little out of the ordinary.

To ensure success it helps to have an understanding of the native conditions a plant comes from, so you can be mindful of the optimum conditions for growth. Surprisingly there are a large number of exotics that will be quite happy in sheltered gardens in milder areas of the country, as they hail from parts of the world where they are exposed to cool temperatures in the winter months and overnight. They may still require a little bit of care, should we experience a harsh winter, but with some prior knowledge of when a cold snap is on its way it’s possible to take measures to minimise any damage.
