Trend Alert...Mid-century modern

Step back in time to create a modern scheme

Background wallpaper Votna 111112 from Levande collection, £36 per roll, Scion

Not showing any signs of losing popularity, the mid-century modern trend is here to stay. What makes it so appealing is that it’s a classic, timeless look, which although hinting at the 50s, is contemporary and easy-to-use in modern-day homes.

The colour palette is inspired by the 50s – blues ranging from turquoise through to teal and navy, pops of red, and plenty of zesty yellows, greens and oranges. Keep the look contemporary by using light neutrals including the always reliable magnolia.

Furniture is streamlined and simple, inspired by Scandi design. Sharp, clean lines are combined with neat curves and materials are unfussy. Mid-toned or light woods have a more authentic feel, although dark woods work well with a darker scheme for a contemporary look.

Complete this look with stylised patterns and geometric shapes for a distinctive mid-century feel that won’t date.
