QHow accurate are cousin matches?

A DNA results are often sold with the excitement of knowing ‘where you came from’. However the real power of DNA tests is not ethnicity reports but the match list.

I often see questions based on the accuracy of the test. Is a cousin match on my DNA proof that we share a common ancestor? The answer is…probably!

Autosomal tests are generally considered to have a high level of accuracy up to the second cousin level. After this, other factors need to be considered to find how closely you are related.
