These days, with so many historical records available online, many genealogists do all their research from home. However, despite a vast amount of work, the fact remains that only a very small fraction of archival records are available on the internet. At the same time, many local record offices are cutting back on their opening hours due to Government budget cuts. One of the metrics archive services use to justify their budgets is visitor numbers, so with many genealogists never setting foot in an archive, achieving good visitor numbers is a challenge.
