2017 HONDA FIREBLADE AND SUZUKI GSX-R1000

The Eicma show in Milan was an opportunity to quiz the men behind the biggest machines of 2017 – the Fireblade’s designer, Masatoshi Sato, and Shinichi Sahara, who is responsible for the new Suzuki GSX-R1000. They both offered a fascinating insight into the machinations behind the new bikes – and a glimpse into what we could expect fromboth machines in 2017…

BY THE MEN WHO BUILT THEM…

MASATOSHI SATO HONDA FIREBLADE LARGE PROJECT LEADER

How did you go about designing the new Fireblade?

We haven’t developed the Fireblade to solely win races. The 2014 ’Blade had reached its pinnacle, which left us wondering how we could move it on. The model’s core qualities have always been its ease of use and high levels of enjoyment. We wanted to continue in that tradition, which is why we weren’t drawn into just making the Fireblade and the SP version model race bikes you could use on the roads. We wanted them to be great road bikes first, and for the separately engineered SP2 version of the new ’Blade to be the model that showcased our outright track performance abilities. We were so committed down this path that we even had a separate engineering team in place to develop the SP2 so it didn’t compromise the focus of the RR and SP. Above all else, they had to be fantastic road bikes own direction with the new model’s development and we’re very pleased with our results and the qualities on offer.
