TIM STEWART’S
I came into possession of the bike relatively late in the build. I’ve known the original builder, Anthony Hewett (aka Hewie), for a few years and he is an absolute R1 nut. My contribution amounts to the icing on the cake. It had never been ridden, not once, since the rebuild. Hewie wanted to create a homage, to the R7. Basically, what if Yamaha had also made a limited edition, absolutely no-holds-barred, SBK spec R1 at the same time as they introduced the R7? The donor bike was a repairable write-off 2000 model and the original frame, swingarm and engine remain. The Attack Racing triple clamp houses the front end of a 2006 model to accommodate the radial mount Brembo stoppers. There are no stock nuts or bolts left in place, mostly replaced with titanium hardware. A bog stock first generation R1 is already an awesome machine. So now that bog stock Rl’s been completely disassembled and lovingly rebuilt from scratch - with superior components, including state-of-the-art brakes and modern, high end suspension, a race exhaust system and a set of Bridgestone BT-003s - you suddenly have a real weapon at your disposal. In simple terms, it rides like it looks. Silky smooth, silly fast and with telepathic handling.
