THE WINTER OF OUR CONTENT

Bikes needn’t take a backseat for the next few months. Head off road and you’ll keep bike sharp all the way through to your next trackday…
Sharpen your skills, have a hoot and make winter great!

WINTER SKILLS

I’m just popping out for a ride. It’s two below freezing, and the weather girl says it’s not going to get much warmer. I know I’ll feel knackered by the end of the day, and it’s more than likely I’ll have a crash or two at some point along the way. I’ll probably get a bit flustered and turn the air blue from time to time. So why, I hear you ask, why would I want to subject myself to this sort of suffering? The answer? Because I can.

Despite an industry’s impressions to the contrary, I’m not in any way perverse and masochistic. I’m willing to take all the aforementioned on the chin because I know it’ll be well worth enduring. It’s part and parcel of riding off-road, a form of biking with many serious plus points – especially at this time of year. Armed with an enduro or trailie bike, you can ride pretty much all year round, having a massive hoot in the process. None of the usual cold months’ doom and depression applies in this game. Having to put your bike into hibernation until March just isn’t necessary. In the off-road world, it’s fun and frivolity all the way through the calendar. It’s definitely something to consider when your road bike’s tucked up in the garage at the end of the year. One of many good reasons to give it a go is because by riding through winter you’ll be sharp as you like for the first road blast in the spring. There’s no ABS or traction control to rely on, no. All that matters is skill and judgement – both of which can be learned by miles in the saddle.
