Our consultant lifted his head up from our notes and said: “Given the relatively quick success you had with Clomid the first time, the fact that you’ve now been taking it for 12 months without success and that you are now 37, I think it would be wise to consider IVF.” It was a positive next step. It was logical. It was progress.

It was however, not something I had really been prepared to hear. I could feel my chest tightening as I was obviously struggling to relax but I was also at a complete loss as to why I’d suddenly seemingly lost the ability to speak or think.

The problem was really quite simple. Despite the months and months of building up to this moment, I had just realised then and there that I hadn’t really allowed myself to prepare for it.
