ELESIN OBA: THE KING’S HORSEMAN – NETFLIX
Exploring the themes of honour, duty, shame, ritual suicide, and what happens when cultural sensitivities are bypassed, The King’s Horseman is inspired by true events in the Oyo Empire in the 1940s. When the king dies, his chief horseman, Elesin Oba, is meant to sacrifice himself to accompany the king to the realm of his ancestors in the afterlife. Allured by beauty and desire, he derails from his duty, setting catastrophic events in motion. An adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning writer Wole Soyinka’s play Death and the King’s Horseman, it’s filled with fantastic costumes, tragedy, and humorous moments. The film’s been described as a “moving depiction of conflicting values,” and is a must-see on our list.
