POWELL’S DOUBLE
EURO JUNIOR SILVER MEDALLIST IMPRESSIVELY STEPS UP TO SENIOR RANKS
ALAN SPINK
THE MIDLAND event moved away from its traditional home in Birmingham to Nuneaton and was a rather lacklustre affair.

Christian Byron (59): winner of the senior men’s 400m title
It seems more British athletes who would traditionally have been winning area titles in the past were instead away competing in places like Geneva.
Elliott Powell produced one of the best performances of the weekend in the 200m, which unusually for a championships was run on day one.

Elliott Powell (43): the European junior silver medallist wins the 100m in 10.63
Powell, the European junior silver medallist and last year’s junior winner in 20.87, ran a nearly identical 20.88, which gave him a clear metre victory over Kyle Ennis’s PB 21.04.
Powell returned the next day to win the 100m in a less impressive 10.63.

Megan Davies: winner of the U20 200m
The women ran the sprints in a more traditional order and last year’s 200m champion, Niamh Bailey, won the 100m in her best yet of 11.90 but was aided by a huge 4.3m/sec tailwind.

Jack Bancroft: 5000m winner
The wind was identical in a quality under-20 men’s 100m as Mustafa Mahamuud won by two metres in 21.02.
Teenager Mollie Courtney was a clear winner of the 100m hurdles in a wind-assisted 13.44, six metres up on Bailey and, while the wind negated it here, she already has the 13.50 World Junior qualifier. Her time broke the 1991 championship best of international Keri Maddox.
