GREAT BRITAIN had not claimed a medal in this event since 1984 and wasn’t even represented at the London 2012 Games after the nation failed to qualify a team.
But emulating the achievement of Simmone Jacobs, Kathy Cook, Beverley Callender and Heather Oakes from 32 years earlier, Asha Philip, Desiree Henry, Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita combined to finish third behind USA and Jamaica, breaking the British record in the process.
The performance, which Asher-Smith said was the result of a lot of hard work and successful bonding of the team, saw them clock 41.77 as USA dominated to cross the line in 41.01 after an unconventional route to the final. Jamaica ran 41.36 for silver.
