Beyond the trans tipping point
NON-BINARY PEOPLE ARE BECOMING MORE VISIBLE, SAYS CERIAN JENKINS
CERIAN JENKINS
It’s been a remarkable couple of years for trans rights. From the rise of former President Obama making history by being the first president to say the word “transgender” during his State of the Union speech in 2015, Laverne Cox’s Time magazine “Transgender Tipping Point” cover, through to the publication of the UK’s Women and Equalities Select Committee Transgender Equality report, equality is – if not yet a reality – arguably closer than ever.
Yet in moments when I’m confronted by ridicule, contempt or wilful ignorance regarding my own non-binary identity, it strikes me that the societally-ingrained suspicion of gender non-conformity remains as powerful as ever.
