THE CULT OF KIM NEWMAN
The critic and novelist selects the month’s weirdest home-ent releases
CIA BLACK SITES are the new deserted warehouses: affordable backdrops for gunfights, running around, barked military intelligence jargon, multiple betrayals, a general sense that our side is probably worse than theirs, and (if the elements align) the required amount of suspense, excitement and action.
Three next-big-thing movie stars who didn’t quite work out clash in a drab concrete bunker in Sophia Banks’ twisty but predictable terrorist opus Black Site . CIA analyst Abby (Michelle Monaghan) wants a crack at interrogating super-terrorist Hatchet (Jason Clarke), while private security thug Raymond (Jai Courtney) favours more tortury methods of inquiry. Hatchet escapes from an inescapable cell and begins murdering the inept staff of this high-security facility in slasher-movie style… and a twist ending seems on the cards.
