True crime is home to everything from the most exploitative of sexy murder sagas to the most respectable of dramatisations; The Good Nurse falls into the second category. Based on the story of convicted serial killer Charlie Cullen, Krysty Wilson-Cairns’ script is at least as interested in the mistakes of the multiple hospitals that failed to report their suspicions about their employee as it is in Cullen himself. Eddie Redmayne does excellent work as Cullen, but Jessica Chastain is the real lead, blending vulnerability and guts to portray Cullen’s gutsy friend Amy. This is a thriller that reminds us that disturbed individuals will always exist, but asks whether the real shame belongs to the societies and systems that enable them.
