Grow a hyacinth in a glass jar, ready for a Mother’s Day gift
Even if you have never nurtured a plant in your life, a hyacinth is a safe bet. Emma Hardy’s simple steps in The Winter Garden (CICO Books, £14.99) say to pop the bulb on top of a jar filled with water, tucking any roots down into the base. Be careful not to let the bulb touch the water as it could rot. Leave in a dark, cool place (like a shed) with a paper bag over the top for a few weeks. Bring out into the warm when it begins to shoot, and it’ll flower within a month.
