What to eat pre and post-workout, and why
By Maxim Leach
FUELLING YOUR BODY
If you want to be healthy, it all starts with what you put on your plate. Before you even enter the gym, or go on your run, you need to ensure you are fuelling yourself properly.
People often correlate eating with how we look and how much we weigh, which of course is one factor, but it goes a lot deeper than that – you can still be unhealthy and have a good BMI. The human body is a hugely complex machine, which requires certain nutritional elements to function at its peak.
The majority of people are aware of this fact, but still prioritise eating for pleasure over eating for function. Why? Because the taste of our favourite food hitting our lips sends endorphins whizzing around our brain, which make us feel happy.
If you get to the point where all your food choices are both nutritionally beneficial and bring you pleasure, then you’re onto a winner! Granted, to do this requires a lot of discipline at first – re-training your taste buds to avoid the bad foods is tough. But, after a short while, your cravings will change, and before you know it, you’ll want salads and veggies more than pizza and chips.
