Running outdoors can be the perfect tool to bring happiness into your everyday life. As the world starts to glow with glorious warm autumn hues and the scent of damp foliage fills the air, lacing up your trainers to pound the pavement is the best way to celebrate the magic of the new season.
Exposure to the great outdoors has proven medicinal benefits to our physical and emotional health, so much so that GPs are now prescribing contact with nature to sufferers of poor mental health. Being in nature is thought to help reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol by up to 15 per cent and, remarkably, a study of 20,000 people carried out by researchers at the University of Exeter’s European Centre for Environment & Human Health found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces were more likely to report good health and mental wellbeing than those who didn’t. Furthermore, if the ongoing effects of Covid-19 means that you’re still working from home, taking a break for an outdoor fitness fix could be a muchneeded antidote to feeling cooped up at home.
