“I’m like a fucking Cockney Mother Teresa”

She’s been a soap star, a singer and a West End leading lady, but at 41, Martine McCutcheon is already being called a “survivor”. Now, as she releases her first album in 15 years, she tells Gay Times about her “fall from grace” and her remarkable comeback.

MUSIC

“My husband says to me, ‘Martine, you can make or break a room. When you’re on form, you can walk in and change the energy of the room, and make everyone feel so happy. But when you’re not on form…’”

When Gay Times arrives at her publicist’s office in a posh bit of north London, she’s still gabbing away happily to an interviewer from another publication. When our turn arrives ten minutes later, she apologises for keeping us waiting in a ‘what am I like?’ kind of way, takes a swig from a Diet Coke, and starts nattering away like we’re old pals from back in the day. She’s warm, funny and very honest.
