The spy who loved me

Spies. You know the story. The mysterious secret agent type seduces a femme fatale before she’s dragged into a world of espionage and death. So far, so boring. But BBC2’s new series London Spy gives the genre a much-needed jolt by putting a gay relationship right at the centre. So of course, we went undercover to hear all about it from star Ben Whishaw.

Pale winter sun floods New Covent Garden

Market on a crisp December morning, but we’re the only ones there to see it.

We’ve been sent here by the BBC with instructions to find the production team of new drama London Spy, before we’re whisked offto watch a day of filming. And with the deserted location and the MI6 building looming behind us in Vauxhall, espionage is in the air.

Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent, Adrian Lester and Dame Harriet Walter are already hard at work nearby in Kennington, where a disused factory has been transformed into the location for some shady spy business, and, once we find them, the actors start to share the show’s secrets with us.
