Pete Burns

Pete Burns is a legend.

Yes, he may forever be associated with You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), plastic surgery and Celebrity Big Brother, but the former Dead or Alive singer – who sadly passed away in October aged just 57 – was far more. He was an icon.

In an age where people in the public eye are media trained within an inch of their – usually very young – lives, Pete was also a typhoon of fresh air.

Pete was a trailblazer for all things queer, despite being married to his beloved wife Lynne for 25 years. He later married new partner Michael in 2007. But despite the musical output and visual look being decidedly gay, let’s not be so quick to label him.

He said in his book Freak Unique: “People always want to know – am I gay, bi, trans or what? I say, forget all that. There’s got to be a completely different terminology and I’m not aware if it’s been invented yet. I’m just Pete.”
