gok’s divas

Tweeting a couple of days after Donald Trump’s inauguration that he “had a wonderful dream that Friday never happened…shame it was a dream”, Gok Wan is still reeling from the fact the swearing-in of the new President of the United States wasn’t a nightmare, but a scary reality.

“I’m genuinely terrified”, the usually upbeat Gok tells us. “I know I don’t live in America but I’m terrified about the global impact.”

He sighs, settling on the removal of the LGBT+ page from the White House website as just one example of why we should all be worried. “Things like that make me terrified for the community over there,” he continues. “I’m so upset and scared. LGBT+ rights cannot be ignored. We’ve come so far but I worry there’ll be no progression in the next four years.”

It’s narrow-minded, the 42-year-old adds, to think that what may or may not happen in the US under Trump’s leadership has no knock-on effect. “It’s the most powerful position in the world and that country is respected politically, ethically and morally. And just because I don’t live in that country doesn’t mean I’m not part of that community. I’m a human being on this planet and we have to fight for what’s right for everyone.”
