There but for the Grace of God

Supermodel. Musician. Actress. Artist. Champion of LGBT rights. There’s nothing Grace Jones hasn’t accomplished. And now we can add best-selling author to that list, too. Yes, she’s finally broken her promise and written her memoirs. One of the most illusive and enigmatic personalities of the last few decades is welcoming us into her world. But really, will we ever know who Grace Jones truly is? There’s only one way to find out. Ask the woman herself…

Grace Jones. Grace. Jones. Grace fucking Jones. Where do we start? Well, upon meeting Grace, we start by confessing we gave in to the stories we’d heard about her; her legend; the intimidating persona we’d built up in our heads; the idea that, quite frankly, she’d eat us alive.

“Man eater? That’s a good one,” she chuckles. “Yeah, I’m pretty good at that.”

We were mistaken with our preconceptions, of course. Grace greats us warmly in a London restaurant with a kiss on the cheek, invites us to sit at her table and fills our glass with red wine. Dressed in a black flying suit and a ushanka hat, she’s friendly, speaking passionately and decidedly with a transatlantic accent that, at times, borders on the seductive. As you’d probably expect. If there are any signs of diva behaviour, we’re too enamoured with her to even notice.

We toast, and she muses on our initial confession.

“It takes a while to know me as a person,” she explains, “because there’s this person that’s out there entertaining, performing and doing fun, crazy stuff, but then there’s me at home, which is a whole other person.
