It wasn’t so long ago I was asked to exhibit my cakes at ‘an inaugural free-from event’. Three years later, the word seems almost laughable, as freefrom events are popping up everywhere (hurrah!). So I’m super pleased to be able to tell you I’ll be doing another, this time as a guest speaker. But don’t fret – I’m working the cakes in, too.
You may well be used to going to an event and not being able to have cake (I often expect this as a default outcome). But going to a free-from event to see a coeliac speaker talk about making gluten-free cake and then not being offered any – well, that would be reason to stamp up and down indeed!
I’ve therefore been putting together a talk that involves as much cake as possible. There’ll be baking hacks for those of us who are short on time, quick fixes for those who aren’t blessed in the cake decorating department, but still want their homemade creations to look good (or, at least, not like a sponge building site) and top tips for steering clear of other allergens, too.
Like me, you may well feel freefrom food has been a long time coming. If only I’d been able to glimpse the future when I was a young 20-something. Those days might not have dragged so much, thinking I’d have to forego umpteen types of food and wondering what I’d ever eat again. I might then have had the enormous grin I have on my face here, knowing I’m able to have my cake and eat it (without suddenly dashing to the loo).
