HOLD THE CHEESE!

We love the stuff as much as anyone, but adding it willy-nilly to all kinds of dishes means we’re increasing the fat and salt in our diet for not much taste gain. HFG has teamed up with the British Heart Foundation to reveal 10 bad cheese habits – and how we can make healthier choices

THE TOP 10 NO-GO AREAS

1 EXTRA CHEESE IN YOUR SANDWICH

MOST SANDWICHES come with a protein-rich filling – think ham, tuna, chicken, egg, roast beef – and can be high in calories and fat if mayo is one of the ingredients. Why, then, would you add an extra 187kcal, 16g fat and 10g saturates (the amount provided by a typical 45g serving of cheddar in a sarnie)? Many fillings are also loaded with salt. If you’re adding cheese to a ham sandwich, for example, you’re giving yourself an extra 0.8g salt in an already salty meal – two slices of bread and a slice of ham provide 1.4g of the white stuff. The solution: skip the cheese (and ideally the mayo, too) and instead pad out your sarnie with salad.
