NEED AN INCENTIVE to find your stride? Walking is the easiest form of exercise that’s proven to improve our health; it helps to lower our risk of a long list of diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, depression and dementia, to name a few.

The magic step count that makes a difference is 10,000, says NHS Choices. That’s five miles and will take just 1 hour 20 minutes out of a 24 hour day to rack up, burning around 450 calories. But the NHS calculates that most of us don’t even hit 4,000 – so we need to step up our game.

Summer is a great time to get outdoors, whether walking to work or the shops, going for a stroll after dinner or making it your sport of choice. It’s a great way to catch up with friends or to have time out alone, take in the scenery and add a dose of vitamin D into the bargain. Plus, it’s easy, free and can be done virtually anywhere!
