Make every calorie in your day count…

Nutrition editor Amanda Ursell gives her advice and product recommendations to help you make healthier, nutritious meal choices throughout the day, wherever you may be

Breakfast 400 calories

DO… start the day fresh

A good night’s sleep will give you a headstart when it comes to choosing a healthy breakfast. That’s because waking up tired alters your hormonal patterns, including those that control hunger. You’re more likely to physically crave a ‘quick fix’ of fast-release carbs such as a bowl of sugar-rich cereal if your body hasn’t had a restorative night’s rest.

DO… treat it as a meal

Whether you’re eating breakfast at home, on your way to work or at your desk, this is still one of your three main meals of the day and deserves some time. It may sound unrealistic, but setting aside 15 minutes and dedicating it to enjoying a nutritious start to the day means you’re more likely to remember the experience and be less prone to mindless snacking in the hours ahead.

DO… create a ritual

Knowing what you’re going to eat in the morning means you’re more likely to stick with it. Preparing the table or setting a tray the night before will become second nature when you get into the habit. These rituals help to define breakfast as an important opportunity to fuel yourself appropriately for the morning ahead. Alternatively, check the nutritional content of your regular coffee-shop options online and earmark the healthiest options before you set off.
