Dietitian Juliette Kellow compares some everyday staples to help you shop and eat more healthily

THE HIGH-FIBRE content of bran flakes – a 30g serving provides 13% of our daily needs – means they make a good, nutritious start to the day. Most brands are fortified with iron and several vitamins, too. Many have added vitamin B12 and vitamin D, in particular. This makes them a good choice for those following a vegan diet as vitamin B12 is found naturally only in animal foods, and the best natural sources of vitamin D are oily fish and egg0073

BRAN FLAKES vs WHEAT BISCUITS

BECAUSE WHEAT biscuits are tailor-made to control portions, there’s no chance of unintentionally having double the recommended serving size! Along with their high fibre content, this makes them useful for achieving or maintaining a healthy weight. They’re also lower in sugar and salt than bran flakes (most get a green traffic light for these nutrients, while bran flakes tend to get orange for both). They’re fortified with iron and some B vitamins, although, unlike many bran flake brands, these don’t usually include vitamins B12 or D.
