HEALTHY EATING STARTS HERE

Is your kitchen overdue for a food stock-take? Healthy cooking and eating is so much easier if you’ve got the right raw materials to hand. We asked HFG recipe consultant Phil Mundy to put together your ingredient must-haves and share five easy storecupboard dishes. Then we turned to the sage advice of Marie Kondo, the queen of tidying, to make your kitchen an efficient place (that sparks joy!) and, just as importantly, queens of clean Aggie MacKenzie and Emma Marsden share natural ways to make it sparkle…

Storecupboard spring clean

FIRST, GET YOUR CUPBOARDS IN ORDER…

● TACKLE one cupboard at a time. Remove everything and give the cupboard a good clean with surface disinfectant.

● CHECK the dates on everything. Opened bottles and jars usually have a pretty short shelf life, so if in doubt, throw it out. This isn’t just about safety – old self-raising flour, for instance, won’t give your cakes a rise, and spices lose their potency.

● GROUP items such as pastas and grains; baking products; oils and vinegars; canned pulses and veg; nuts and seeds, etc. Decant different pasta shapes into large glass jars – you’re more likely to use them up if you can see them. Keep pasta oddments in one jar ready to use in soups and pasta bakes.

● ROTATE items according to date, with the ones that need using up first near the front. Get into the habit of rotating your stock when putting away a big shop. You may want to buy mini shelves or stackable roto-caddies – Lakeland sells a Caddy stack range (prices from £4.99), to maximise space.

● NOTE what you’ve got. Keep a list on the fridge of items you’re running low on and flag up anything in abundance (and plan a meal or two around these).

● LABEL food in the freezer so it’s easy to keep stock. Ditch anything over six months old and check for freezer burn on meat and fish (you’ll notice a whiteish or pale tint on the surface of foods or excessive frost coming out of higher-water content foods such as veg).
