PREPARE TO BARE

The start of the sunshine season encourages all of us to show a little more skin, but what if you’re trying to avoid the damage that can come with sun exposure? Beauty expert Leah Hardy shares her strategies for achieving that sun-kissed look at any age without stressing your skin

WHO DOESN’T LOVE THE RADIANT GLOW you get from a day in the sun? There’s no faster way to make your eyes look brighter or blur complexion flaws.

But we also know sunbathing and sunbeds are a recipe for premature ageing, wrinkles, brown spots and even skin cancer. Not pretty. And it’s even more of a concern as the years go by and natural ageing kicks in.

The answer? Fake it! Forget yesterday’s streaky tans, harsh, glittery bronzers and orange foundations. Today’s faux favourites combine believable colour with sheer, skinloving textures that leave you looking naturally, radiantly, sun-kissed.

Whatever your age or life stage, there’s a way to get your glow on.

KYLIE JENNER
ARIANA GRANDE

WHETHER YOU’RE HEADING POOLSIDE IN A BIKINI or flashing some flesh in festival-ready cut-offs, you’re likely to enjoy showing off a little tanned skin at this stage in your life. Your glowing role models? Think highlight-queen Kylie Jenner, 21, or tanned and sun-kissed Ariana Grande, 23.

MAKE IT UP

Make-up artist Kellie Mitchell says, ‘At this age, your skintone is likely to be the lightest it will ever be. That’s because your skin has accumulated little sun damage and is more transparent than it will be when you’re older. But you’ll probably still have plenty of natural colour in your lips, brows and lashes. This contrast makes you look younger and means you don’t have to go dark to glow.’ Instead, play up your natural luminosity. ‘Glossy skin is in,’ says Kellie. Mix an illuminating product with foundation for a soft-focus effect first, says Kellie, ‘Then highlight your best features with an illuminating powder applied to the tops of cheekbones, under the brow, on the tip of the nose and along the cupid’s bow.’
