ANOTHER SWEET INTERPRETATION

I was interested to read your news story, A sweeter outcome for children (August issue). I grew up in the 1960s and agree that sweet treats weren’t so available as they are today. I remember having only one sweet each week, and that was as a reward from the Sunday School teacher for attending – how about that for a positive reaction to delayed gratification? Half an hour of boredom on Sunday afternoons, with the reward of a Fox’s Glacier Mint by way of compensation! The University of Washington found children today can wait longer for gratification, but is there an alternative explanation? Sweet treats are so readily available these days that perhaps they can easily shrug their shoulders to a marshmallow because they might consider it quite humdrum. It’s easy to resist something when you generally have a plentiful supply of it… SALLY MEIKLE
