Lots of us pick a favourite exercise and stick with it, but a new study suggests variety is best. US researchers divided a group of 750 patients who had previously been diagnosed with coronary heart disease into three groups: 225 took aerobic exercise; 240 did yoga; and 285 combined both. Those who did the double for six months saw twice the reduction in blood pressure, body mass index and cholesterol levels compared to the single-exerise groups; those health improvements would also protect against type 2 diabetes. Perhaps it’s down to the potent mix of mental and physical benefits, but whatever the reason, we say let your body enjoy a mishmash of movement.
