PARIS, 1940
GETTY
France has fallen and the German army is in Paris. Days after the armistice of 22 June 1940, Adolf Hitler makes a triumphant visit to the conquered capital, accompanied by his favourite architect, Albert Speer (left of Hitler), and sculptor Arno Breker (right). They take in the Palais Garnier, Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, but the highlight of the Fuhrer’s three-hour tour is the tomb of Napoleon. “That was the greatest and finest moment of my life,” he later declared.
