TIANJIN, CHINA, 1901
These detained men are ‘Boxers’ – members of a society which, between 1899 and 1901, fought an anti-Christian and anti-colonial uprising in Qing China known as the Boxer Rebellion. Realising that the people supported the Boxers, the Qing government sided with them too, declaring war on the foreign powers and besieging their legations in Peking. The unrest only came to an end after the intervention of a military coalition that included Britain, the US and Japan.
