It’s a labour of love, but it’s so worth it
With a background in illustration and a beach hut crying out for a revamp, Emily Dupen used her vintage-tinged designs to spruce up her seaside space

Emily carried her black and white theme as far as the big front doors, where she made her hut stand out from the crowd with monochrome candy stripes

A plastic outdoor rug extends the footprint of Emily’s hut, and also doubles-up as a picnic blanket

A bit about me
Hi, I’m Emily Dupen, and this is my lovely 1940s beach hut that I share with my mum and brother. It’s on Hove Promenade and we bought it in 2006.

Before
My problem beach hut
For a long time the beach hut had a plain blue door and we kept her white inside. She didn’t have much character and over the years we seemed to be filling her more and more with junk. The beach huts take a real beating from the weather, being on the seafront, especially in the winter, so every few summers I have to sand and/or strip her down and re-paint inside and out.
