Bag a kitchen for under £5k

Rachel Ogden reveals how cut-price kitchens can be just as stylish as their designer counterparts

Whether your dream kitchen is a place to spend hours baking, somewhere to entertain friends and family, or simply a space to whip up quick suppers, fitting a new scheme can be costly. It’s very easy to be overwhelmed by choice and end up spending more than you planned. Fortunately, armed with our expert advice and with just a little shopping around, it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are lots of great ways to keep your budget in check, while still creating a beautiful design that has plenty of ‘wow’ factor. Save in one area while you splurge on another, or try all the tips for a seriously luxe kitchen for less – the choice is yours. Just don’t forget to invite us round for a cuppa when it’s finished.

Before embarking on your kitchen renovation, it’s worth putting pen to paper. Start with the essential white goods and fixtures (the ‘working triangle’ rule is useful), then suss out how much storage space you actually need and use – are you more of a wall-hung unit person, or do you like the freedom of free-standing cabinetry? If you’re truly stuck, most high street kitchen providers have an in-house design service.

About Homestyle

We’re so excited to bring you the second issue of HomeStyle magazine. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch, it’s great to hear all of your wonderful stories and see that we’ve ignited your creativity and energy to transform your homes. It’s been a fun-packed month here in the HomeStyle offices, let me tell you! I stepped into the battlefield of The Great Upcycling Challenge for the first time; see the results on page 84 – then please vote for me in our little competition on Twitter! I also visited some amazing spaces this issue, including the inspiring home of seamstress and professional crafter Lisa Comfort (our cover girl this month, see page 16). Everywhere I turned there was another idea Lisa had cleverly designed – and always high on style yet tight on budget. The team’s been busy again tracking down even more high street bargains for you to snap up, just turn the page to get started. And remember we want you to be a part of HomeStyle too, so do send us your project pictures and it’s never too late to be our cover girl!
