RACHEL SOWINSKI
Smooth transitions are important in almost every type of riding. In the saddle, there’s nothing quite like the effortless shifting of gears as your horse responds to your slightest cue and adjusts his speed and gait with precision. But the best is when you just think about the transition, and your horse picks up on it. In this issue, we’re focusing on a different kind of transition: Every year, hundreds of thousands of horses wind up in transition between owners or careers. Many of these horses are at risk of potentially ending up in inhumane situations.
The Right Horse Initiative focuses on bringing horse people—and the whole horse industry—together to improve the lives of horses in transition, and fi nding ways to change the conversation about horse adoption. We are proud to partner with this organization to help get that conversation started, and to keep it going. The Right Horse is all about good people for good horses, and that sounds just like Horse Illustrated readers.
