This month, we’ll be saluting our equine seniors. If you’re like me, you probably learned to ride with the most trusted and savvy member of the barn: a horse over 15 years old. I’ve encountered many inspiring golden oldies since then that have all proved that age is but a number. These horses are out there competing (well!) in 5-star eventing competition, the Tevis Cup, and much more. If you’re looking for a new mount, don’t discount that an older horse could be just what you’re looking for, especially with veterinary advances helping our horses live longer and healthier lives than ever.
For a fresh perspective on the benefits of getting a senior for your next horse—even one that’s never been started under saddle—turn to Hope Ellis-Ashburn’s eye-opening article on pg. 36. We also have three inspiring stories of senior women adopting older horses—turn to pg. 20 to see how these relationships paid off for both sides.
