INSIDE A SELF-DRIVING COMBAT VEHICLE
ATLAS is driverless, completely uncrewed and can navigate the battlefield a step ahead of troops

DID YOU KNOW?
ATLAS can drive sideways on slopes with angles up to 30 degrees
The latest development in autonomous combat has emerged from the R&D department of defence company BAE Systems, with a driverless vehicle that’s packed with cutting-edge technology rather than a human crew. This ten-tonne unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) goes by the name of ATLAS, an acronym for Autonomous Tactical Light Armour System. The light armour mentioned in its name is a feature made possible by the absence of crew, who would require heavier armour for more protection. Being uncrewed, ATLAS can scout ahead of soldiers, reporting its findings in real time.
