SPACE 1999: CRISIS ON MOONBASE ALPHA
Space: 1999 centred on three hundred scientists on Moonbase Alpha who struggled for survival after the moon was blasted out of Earth’s orbit by the ignition of thermonuclear waste containers on September 13, 1999. Former Mission: Impossible headliners Martin Landau and Barbara Bain were the stars and despite great publicity, the show was wedged between a twilight zone of Star Trek reruns and just prior to the premiere of Star Wars. The precursor to Space: 1999 was UFO, a smart and expensive-looking series that was produced from 1969-70 and served as Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s first live-action TV series. Aired on American TV during 1972-73, it depicted the efforts of a British military base (SHADO) to repel a weekly attack by alien flying saucers.
