Blue reached the police station not long after eight the next morning. Another sunny day. He got a coffee and a bacon roll from the canteen, and took them to his office. There wasn’t much to see from the window now, the Scotia Hotel was closed for the duration of the lockdown. He sat down to plan his next moves.
A visit to Mull was necessary, to take a look at Charlotte’s cottage. Had she come over on the ferry to meet her killer? Or had the camper van been to Mull before it came to Oban. If so, had she travelled on the ferry with her killer. Or been followed by him over to Oban? Then there was the issue of how the killer had left Oban. Sadly, the answers were legion. He could have taken the train or the bus. He might have had a car waiting for him there. Or he could have taken the ferry to Mull, or Lismore, Islay or Colonsay. Or he might still be in Oban. At least the van could be spotted on the CCTV footage. But without even a list of suspects, anyone on the boat could be the killer. It was so much easier when you had a photo to show people.
