Saturday morning was overcast. Perfect weather for driving. On the way to Crianlarich Blue, who was at the wheel, asked Vunsells to sum up where she thought they’d got to on the case.
“OK, boss. Well, it does look like the killer goes over to Mull in order either to kill Charlotte, or to find out what she knows. Unfortunately for him, he just misses her. But he doesn’t know she’s going to be away for three weeks, so he hangs on, checking the cottage every now and then. We know that from Antoinette’s sightings. Finally, probably on Sunday, he finds her in. Then, he either just kills her, or he discovers what she knows, and then kills her. He puts the body in the camper van and covers it, then collects her laptop, phone, documents, whatever he can find that might be relevant to the book. Then he searches the cottage, in case Charlotte has a USB key or something like that hidden away. Then he drives somewhere else, spends the night in the van, and heads for the ferry the next morning.”
