Americans like to go on about the genius of our founders, talking about a high minded attempt to create an enlightened government. That doesn’t really fit with history. When the founders wrote our Constitution, they came from a place of mutual distrust. At the time, they were dealing with the feuding interests of numerous religious groups, sectarian violence, and hatred between various groups over the question of whether people ought to be allowed to own other people.
