Operation Yellowhammer envisioned the very real threat of serious civil unrest and the possibility of state collapse in an apocalypse scenario Brexit

LATE LAST year, as the first Brexit deadline drew near without the British government having reached an acceptable deal with the European Union, the then Prime Minister Theresa May hastily set about putting contingency plans in place in the event of a ‘worst case’ or ‘apocalypse’ scenario crash out. At the time, thanks to the carelessness of Treasury Minister John Glen and the eagle eye of a press photographer at Downing Street in early September, certain details of ‘Operation Yellowhammer’ were made known to the public. Yellowhammer was the codename assigned to the London government’s plans to tackle what at the time May described as “Brexit contingencies.” Chief among these, as political and trade analysts had already surmised, was the mitigation of the immediate impacts of a no-deal Brexit: Food and medicines shortages, stockpiling and rationing, and the likelihood of civil disturbance and rioting.
