DEREK OGG Q.C. had a veritable computer for a brain; his ability to present and dissect complex arguments was unrivalled in legal circles. I admired, jealously, his achievements for three decades or so, knowing I’d never be a fraction of the lawyer he was. In a documentary repeated two years ago I saw the man behind the gown and wig - his heart brimming over with concern and care, but most of all he’d the immense courage to fight, likely against the greatest of odds, for those terribly vulnerable and deemed least worthy within our society - drug addicts, heroin users, AIDS sufferers and HIV carriers. He did so for most of his adult life and his efforts likely saved countless lives and helped to prevent multiple tragedies.
