BANNED by the Guardian

ON THAT ‘We are the 45%’ Facebook group I keep getting invited to watch videos made by a group called Independence Live. No doubt these are good-hearted individuals with sincere proindependence hearts, but I have boxsets of The Avengers (Steed and Mrs Peel, not the silly Americans in tights) and The Persuaders to work through, so talky politics videos don’t stand a chance. But their slogan caught my attention; Don’t Hate the Media - Be the Media! In other words, there’s no point moaning about the mainstream media (MSM). Rather, do the job yourself! This is not only possible in the connected modern world of social media, but it chimes with the general discontent about the MSM within the independence movement. Now, some of my views on the MSM are slightly unfashionable and I’ll get to them later, but first, might as well have a little moan.

Yes, I get fed up with the BBC London and their fear-stoked insistence on giving Nigel Fromage a mouthpiece, their Anglocentric view of the world and especially (since I’m quite shallow) their Anglocentric view of sport. I detest the distorted view of life in Scotland, life in the UK and, well, life in general that you find in hideous right-wing hate-rags like the Daily Mail and the Daily Express. And, oh yes, there’s the Scottish MSM. What really annoys me about them is their uncritical assumption that 95% of Scottish football reporting should be about the Gruesome Twosome formerly known as The Old Firm.
