The study or forecasting of potential developments, as in science, technology, and society, using current conditions and trends as a point of departure* takes a lot of effort these days. The futurologist has to pedal mighty hard to keep up. Using current conditions and trends as a point of departure calls for some nifty steering when those conditions and trends are constantly and erratically shifting.
