A Walk in the Black Forest…

Inchcailloch is one of the largest islands on Loch Lomond and it lies just a bowshot from the closest point on the loch shore near Balmaha. The ferry journey from Balmaha Boatyard takes about three minutes. Although the island is less than a mile long and only a few hundred yards wide, it’s a peaceful, tree-shaded green place where silence and tranquillity can be near-guaranteed. The surprising thing about the place, though, is that the calming oakwoods that dominate the island are as much industrial history as they are natural history. The trees are there because they were demanded by the greedy Industrial Revolution, to fuel factories that were just on its doorstep.
