In Central Scotland you can’t escape the Campsie Fells. Drive north on the M74 through post-industrial Lanarkshire and you’ll see them sprawling before you, with twin-topped Meikle Bin (1870ft) protruding in a jaunty manner to the east. From the Glasgow Queen Street-Edinburgh railway, the Campsies present a green but craggy front. Their slopes begin to rise less than ten miles from Scotland’s largest city. The heather moors where the Ballagan Burn rises are as wild and lonely a spot as you’ll find anywhere in Scotland yet they’re the same distance and direction from George Square as Walthamstow is from Central London
