Architect Mark Buchanan constructed the large main home amidst mature, existing pine and oak trees. “I wanted to build something that looks like it has been there 200 years,” he says. “We wanted to set it over the hill to maximize the view so the house appeared gradually over the hill.”
Nestled in the heart of Virginia “horse hunt” country, the Badger Hill farm is a lovely abode, home to two horse lovers and their horses. The main farmhouse is an enlargement of Lilac Cottage, one of the three original cottages on the property. Whereas Lilac Cottage dates back to the 1950s, the new home is a recent development, masterminded by Buchanan of Neumann Lewis Buchanan Architects.
Even though Mark jokes that “the horses have the best view,” the home itself provides a pleasant outlook on the landscape beyond. Note the effective use of small apertures around the doorframe, as well as the windowed doors along the left-hand side.
