WATER WAYS

STAY HYDRATED ON YOUR BUG-OUT ROUTE.
Rivers are great sources of water. Remember that no matter how clean the water looks, it still needs to be treated. In this case, the farmhouse on the right makes me question its purity.

When many people make a bug-out plan and prepare all their “essential” gear, the one thing that is often left out of the equation is water. All the experts say that the human body can last up to three weeks without food—but only three to four days without water. How much water should you plan on carrying in a bug-out situation? There is no simple answer to this question, and it’s made more complicated by the fact that you’ll need more clean water than what you plan to drink. No one can give you the “magic number.” This is because it all depends on the situation at hand.

However, one cold, hard fact is that there will never be enough water.

ESTIMATING YOUR REQUIREMENTS

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) determined that an adequate daily fluid intake (coming from everything you consume) is about 3.9 quarts for men and 2.7 quarts for women … under “normal” circumstances. But bug-out conditions are anything but ideal.

This amount of water doesn’t even take into consideration cooking, hygiene or sanitation concerns or any needs for pets.

ONE COLD, HARD FACT IS THAT THERE WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH WATER.

Just for the sake of this example, let’s add another 2 quarts per person per day for these needs. About 6 quarts per person per day is a lot of water! At about 2 pounds per quart, the weight, alone, becomes considerable. Multiply this estimate by the number of people in your party and then by the number of days you will be on the move, and you will see the issue you face.
